Did you know? The best way to manage heat is with heatsinking. There are many heatsink designs, but they are typically broken down into two categories: passive and active. Heatsinks can transfer the heat away from the LED in three ways: conduction, convection, or radiation. CrystalCool™ technology would be classified as active heatsinking because active nanocrystals transfer heat using radiation (transfer through electromagnetic waves).
When it comes to the reliability of an LED lamp, heat is the enemy. As the temperature of a lamp rises over time, life and light output (lumens) dramatically fall.
Another victim due to heat is the color temperature of warm or neutral white lamps, whose color is due to a phosphor coating that converts the blue light to yellow. With exposure to high heat over time, the light’s wavelength changes, making that phosphor conversion less effective. As a result, the light takes on a blue hue.
The most damaging place for heat to build up in an LED lamp is at the junction of the chip and the circuit board. An increase in every 10º C reduces the lamp life by 50 percent.
